KENO This is my grandson Austin with Keno. Keno is the son of Soledad Del Oeste, who also perished in the fire. Keno was born 6/19/2010. Keno actually belonged to my daughter DeAnne. His short life was full of excitement and curiosity, love and desire. He had a full passion for life. I don't know why, but God needed him. This is the only way I can make sense of the entire tragedy.
In Memory of the 24 Horses That Perished, WI On Wednesday, November 25th, 2010 in Plymouth Township, Wisconsin, Footville Fire Chief Joe North responded to a barn fire at 8:42 am on at 927 S. Old Highway 11 at the Humane Organization Rescuing and Saving Equine, (H.O.R.S.E) a nonprofit horse rescue. 24 horses perished in the fire. This Blog site is dedicated to their memorial. "Sheba"
Sheba was a beautiful bay Arabian mare. She was sassy and full of spunk, best of friends with Sunday. You couldn't separate those two. If you took one out of the pasture, you better take both. A loyal friend to the end. Even their stalls were next to each other.
"Frankie"
Frankie was a small QH gelding. He had some painful issues with his rear quarters and was never able to be rideable but he was a wonderful pasture-mate to the other retired horses. He had a great personality and was always ready at grain time!
"Breezy"
Breezy or Breeze was an Appendix mare. Long and lanky with just the attitude that a good looking girl needs. She came in with an old but serious injury, a broken or severely damaged withers. She could at first be ridden lightly but lately not so much as it became too painful for her. She too, was enjoying retirement.
"Vegas"
This is a picture of Vegas when he was a foal. He got his name when his Thoroughbred mom was dropped off here, 30+ yrs old, 9 months pregnant, at least 250 lbs underweight, full of parasites, and covered with rainrot. The vet did not give mom or baby much chance of living through foaling. Well, they both did, but his but passed 2 weeks later leaving him an orphan. He was very, very ill - needing 2 plasma transfusions and lots of medicine. He was raised by one of my QH mares who took him on and nursed him. We named him Vegas because he beat all odds. He made it. He was adopted by my barn manager. He was 2 years old when he passed.
"Star"
She was our baby too, we raised her from birth, with Shawnee's help. I slept on the barn floor with her for a week when she was a foal and we didn't know if she was going to make it. She was a fighter and loved life and did pull through. Again, my baby.
"Soledad Del Oeste"
Registered Peruvian Paso that I adopted out to my daughter DeAnne. Sole was unfortunate to get the very painful disease DSLD or Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis leaving her lame in both rear legs. There is no cure. Only pain control. Beautiful roan with a beautiful honor and esteem who knew exactly who her mom was.
"Shawnee"
Half Belgian, Half Paint but all heart. Shawnee came Jim and Cindy's out of love, not mistreatment. Shawnee never had a foal of her own but raised 4 orphaned foals. She was my best friend in the barn and was there to listen every time I needed someone to talk to.
"McCoy"
Jockey Club name CAPTAIN CALM. Retired out of FL. Loved by his past owners & by myself. Adopted for my own ride. Fast as lightening but gentle as a baby.
"Little Joe"
The mini who thought he wasn't! Little Joe never let his size stop him- as far as he was concerned he was 18hh.
"Jazz"
My Registered black Arabian gelding. We raised him from birth. Pure Egyptian, descendant of Morafic. My baby.
"Danny Girl"
Danny Girl was a beautiful black and white Registered American Paint Horse. She'd been known in the rodeo circuit in her day but now just relaxing in her retirement. Danny had become almost totally blind in her left eye but that didn't stop her from still giving short light rides. Very quiet sweet spirit.
"Daisy"
This little girl was not a mini. Daisy was a dwarf that came up on a truck from Alabama. She was as cute as a button with 1 blue eye and 1 brown eye. Daisy's little legs were starting to become more and more deformed and required more extensive farrier work on her hooves but run like the wind she could. Especially when we wanted to catch her!
"Charger & Painted Delite"
Charger & Painted Delite came in together and never left each others' side. Where one went, the other was 2 steps behind. They were up in their ages and I think they loved each other their entire lives.
"Always On Sunday"
Absolutely gorgeous registered Arabian mare. So gentle, so sweet, so beautiful. Cindy's grandkids rode her. She knew they were young and took care of them.
